Budgie Food

Well, I seem to be nostalgic in my need to talk about Georgie. She taught me so many things.

I wanted to talk about fresh food today.

All parrots really should be offered fresh produce as much as possible. My theory is one time a week is better than none! Really…. Schedules and life tend to really get in the way sometimes. I know some people that prepare and feed fresh produce daily, and bird bread, and even hot mash too. Impresive but I just don’t have that much time.

Here are some things that I have learned:

  • When you shop for your food get fresh bird food too.
  • buy carrots (regular or baby), broccoli, whatever looks good- just a couple of things
  • buy a loaf of healthy whole grain-organic if you can afford it

That really is the basis for helping your bird eat healthier.

When you get home, chop up the veggies and the bread in bird sized pieces and put in a lunch bag in the fridge. Now you have these all ready to go at moments notice.

How to serve:

Georgie loved to have me clip her veggies in her cage with clothespins. She would shred them all to bits. It was fun to watch and made a great mess too! This was fine but sometimes I just didn’t have the time to do that. So I tried chopping the veggies fine and putting them in her food dish and just putting them on a small paper plate on the floor of her cage. Eventually she did eat from all three places but it took a while because she was only used to the veggies hanging up.

Now I offer all my birds veggies all three of these ways.

Some things you can feed your feathered kids:

  • Apple
  • Broccoli
  • Califlower
  • Celery
  • Sprouts
  • Organic baby lettuce
  • Romaine- rinse it off and leave it wet. Budgies like to play in this stuff too.
  • Carrots
  • Zucchini
  • Squash

These are in addition to a good quality seed offered every day.
